Burkina Faso has achieved a historic milestone in gold production, recording its highest output ever in 2025.

Official figures indicate that the country produced 94 tonnes of gold in 2025, marking an increase of more than 30 tonnes compared to 2024. The sharp rise reflects sweeping reforms in the mining sector, stronger regulatory enforcement, and improved state oversight of gold operations.

Authorities say tighter controls on production and exports, coupled with restructuring in the mining industry, significantly boosted output. Artisanal and small-scale mining activities also contributed meaningfully to the overall increase.

The surge in production translated into major fiscal gains. By December 31, 2025, gold revenues had generated over 776 billion CFA francs (approximately $1.4 billion) for the national budget.

Since the military-led government under Captain Ibrahim Traoré assumed office, gold mining activities are reported to have contributed about $18 billion to Burkina Faso’s economy, reinforcing gold’s central role in national revenue mobilisation.

The government has described the sector’s performance as a key pillar of economic resilience, as Burkina Faso continues to prioritise resource sovereignty and tighter state control over strategic minerals.
