SEKONDI — Ghana's Black Queens are 90 minutes from the next stage of their dream of a first-ever Olympic Games. They host Mauritius on Tuesday, October 13, at the Essipong Sports Stadium in Sekondi, with kick-off at 3:00 PM, carrying a commanding 3-0 lead from the first leg.

The return leg in the Oil City is the second match of the round two tie in the African qualifiers for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, USA. Ghana go in as clear favourites. Mauritius need a miracle.

A first-half blitz in Mauritius

Ghana did the hard work away from home. In the first leg on Thursday, October 8, at the Côte d'Or National Sports Complex in St Pierre, the Black Queens scored three times before half-time and never looked back.

Abigail Kim opened the scoring in the 16th minute, turning in a low cross from Stella Nyamekye from close range. Nine minutes later, Alice Kusi doubled the lead from a well-placed Comfort Yeboah cross. Benedicte Simon then added a third before the interval to all but settle the tie.

Head coach Kim Lars Björkegren shuffled his defence for the trip. Police Ladies centre-back Margaret Agyapomaa made her senior debut alongside Diana Amoako, with Afi Amenyeku in goal. Mauritius held firm after the break, but the damage was done.

Finishing the job at home

A three-goal cushion leaves Ghana firmly in control. Björkegren's side need only to avoid a heavy defeat to go through, and a strong home crowd in Sekondi will expect another win.

Mauritius, who reached this stage by knocking out Djibouti 3-1 on aggregate, need to win by at least three goals just to draw level on aggregate. For the visitors, an early goal is the only way back into the tie.

The qualifier also gives the Black Queens a chance to rebuild momentum after a disappointing showing at the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations two months ago.

Chasing Olympic history

For all their success in African football, the Black Queens have never played at the Olympic Games. They have failed to qualify for all eight editions of the women's tournament since it was introduced.

The road to Los Angeles is long. Africa's qualifiers run over five knockout rounds, and only two African teams will make it to LA 2028. Thanks to their ranking, Ghana were among 29 nations handed a bye through the preliminary round, and this tie with Mauritius is their first step.

Win on Tuesday, and the Black Queens move one round closer to ending that long wait.
