A concerned citizen has called on authorities in the Okaikwei North Municipality to urgently address the growing presence of roadside traders occupying the outer public transport lane at Lapaz, warning that the situation is obstructing vehicles and worsening traffic congestion.
The citizen says traders have extended their activities into a section of the road reserved for public transport movement, reducing the available space for vehicles and making it increasingly difficult for motorists to move freely.
The appeal has renewed attention on the challenges of managing roadside trading in Lapaz, one of the busy commercial and transport areas in the Greater Accra Region.
Traders' Activities Raise Traffic Concerns
The occupation of road space by traders can create difficulties for commercial drivers, private motorists and other road users.
When vehicles are unable to use designated lanes freely, drivers may be forced to slow down, change lanes unexpectedly or compete for limited road space. Such conditions can contribute to congestion and increase the risk of road accidents.
The concerned citizen is therefore urging the relevant authorities to intervene before the situation deteriorates further.
The appeal also highlights the need to protect public transport routes and ensure that roads remain accessible to vehicles and pedestrians.
Lapaz Has Faced Previous Decongestion Exercises
The latest concern comes months after authorities carried out a decongestion exercise in Lapaz.
In May 2026, traders operating along roadsides and pavements in the area were given a seven-day deadline to vacate, as part of efforts led by Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Ocloo, Accra Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey and officials of the Okaikwei North Municipal Assembly.
Some affected traders were expected to move to nearby markets, including Achimota, Kisseman and Abeka.
The exercise was intended to improve movement for motorists and pedestrians and restore order in public spaces.
However, the latest complaint raises questions about the long-term effectiveness of such interventions and the need for consistent monitoring to prevent the reoccupation of cleared areas.
Authorities Urged to Enforce Road Regulations
The concerned citizen wants the responsible municipal authorities to take prompt action to remove traders operating within the public transport lane and restore its intended use.
The situation also presents a wider challenge for local authorities: maintaining accessible roads while recognising the economic importance of informal trading to many households.
Providing suitable trading spaces, enforcing existing regulations and maintaining regular supervision could help prevent the same problems from recurring.
As calls for intervention grow, residents and motorists will be looking to the Okaikwei North Municipal Assembly and other relevant agencies to address the situation and ensure that the Lapaz road corridor remains safe and accessible.
