The Management of the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park has called on the Bank of Ghana (BoG) to replace the image of the Big Six on selected Ghanaian banknotes with the historic photograph of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah declaring the country's independence on March 6, 1957.

The proposal, announced in a press statement on Friday, November 6, 2026, seeks to broaden the historical representation of Ghana's national currency by recognising other significant events that shaped the country's journey to independence.

The Memorial Park acknowledged the important contributions of the Big Six to Ghana's independence struggle but argued that the country's banknotes should also showcase other defining moments in its history.

According to the Management, the iconic photograph of Dr Nkrumah announcing Ghana's independence captures a historic turning point that marked the end of British colonial rule and the emergence of Ghana as a sovereign nation.

Memorial Park Wants Ghana's History Reflected on Currency

The Management believes that currency serves a purpose beyond facilitating financial transactions, describing banknotes as important symbols of national identity, heritage, pride and collective memory.

It argued that featuring the independence declaration photograph on selected denominations would give greater recognition to one of the most significant moments in Ghana's history.

The statement noted that although the Big Six deserve lasting recognition for their role in the independence movement, there is an opportunity to incorporate other important personalities, events and milestones into the country's currency.

“Our currency should not merely facilitate transactions; it should tell our national story. And there is no story more fundamental to modern Ghana than the moment we became free,” the statement said.

Proposal Aligns With Bank of Ghana's Heritage Series

The Memorial Park said its proposal is consistent with the Bank of Ghana's planned Heritage Series of banknotes, which provides an opportunity to celebrate important figures and events that have shaped the nation's history.

The suggestion comes shortly after the central bank unveiled its redesigned Heritage Series banknotes on November 3, 2026.

The Park believes the proposed inclusion of the independence declaration photograph would complement the historical representation on Ghana's currency and preserve the significance of the 1957 declaration for future generations.

The Bank of Ghana currently features the Big Six on the front of its banknotes, alongside the Independence Arch.

Ghana Approaches 70th Independence Anniversary

The proposal also comes as Ghana prepares to celebrate 70 years of independence in 2027.

Ghana gained independence from British colonial rule on March 6, 1957, under the leadership of Dr Kwame Nkrumah, becoming the first country in sub-Saharan Africa to gain independence from a European colonial power.

The Memorial Park described the independence declaration as a defining moment not only for Ghana but also for the wider African liberation movement.

It believes placing the historic photograph on selected banknotes would provide an enduring tribute to the occasion and reinforce the values of freedom, sovereignty and national identity.

The statement was signed by Dr Collins Rawlings Nunyonameh, Acting Executive Director of the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park.

The proposal is now directed to the Bank of Ghana for consideration. The central bank has not yet announced an approval of the request or identified the denominations that could be affected.
