Former President John Dramani Mahama has received a symbolic gift of the United Nations Charter in all six official languages from António Guterres during a meeting in Addis Ababa.
Mahama described the gesture as a powerful symbol of the shared commitment between Ghana and the United Nations to multilateralism, peace, and international cooperation. He added that the presentation also reflects the UN’s continued partnership with Africa and Ghana.
Talks on security and democracy
According to Mahama, discussions with the UN Secretary-General focused on pressing issues facing the African continent, particularly growing security challenges in the Sahel and other conflict-prone regions.
The two leaders also discussed the need to strengthen democratic institutions across Africa, as well as ongoing regional peace initiatives. Among the key concerns raised was the instability affecting the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) countries.
Support ahead of AU chairmanship
Mahama expressed appreciation for the UN’s commitment to supporting Ghana as it prepares to assume the chairmanship of the African Union in 2027.
He noted that the assurance from the UN Secretary-General underscores the importance of global cooperation in addressing Africa’s political, economic, and security challenges.
