Ukraine could soon receive one of Europe’s most advanced air-to-air missiles as part of a major new military aid package being prepared by Sweden, a move analysts say could significantly strengthen Kyiv’s air defense capabilities.

The package would mark one of Stockholm’s largest contributions since Vladimir Putin ordered the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Talks between defence ministers

Ukraine’s newly appointed Defence Minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, confirmed that Kyiv has been in discussions with Swedish authorities about a new round of military support.

According to reports, Fedorov held talks with Pål Jonson on February 1, during which the potential transfer of advanced Meteor air-to-air missiles was discussed.

What is the Meteor missile?

The Meteor is widely regarded as one of the most advanced beyond-visual-range air-to-air missiles currently in service across Europe and NATO.

Developed by the European defense company MBDA, the missile is powered by a solid-fuel ramjet engine, allowing it to sustain speeds above Mach 4 throughout its flight. This design enables the weapon to retain high energy and lethality even at long distances.

Defense experts say the Meteor is among the longest-range operational air-to-air missiles in Europe, making it a potentially powerful addition to Ukraine’s air arsenal.

Potential impact on the war

If Sweden proceeds with the transfer, the Meteor system could significantly enhance Ukraine’s ability to counter hostile aircraft and strengthen its air defenses.

However, Swedish authorities say discussions are ongoing, and no final decision has been publicly confirmed.

The possible delivery comes as Ukraine continues to seek advanced Western weaponry to maintain its defensive capabilities and deter further Russian advances.
