John Dumelo, Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture, has presented 110,000 birds for distribution to poultry farmers in the Bono East Region under the government’s flagship Nkoko Nketenkete initiative.

The beneficiary farmers are spread across the 11 political and administrative Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the region.

Support package for farmers

Speaking at a ceremony in Techiman, the regional capital, Dumelo said the government would also provide 48,833 bags of feed, 63,000 doses of antibiotics, and 44,000 units of glucose to support the birds.

He explained that each assembly would receive and distribute 10,000 birds, and urged the various MMDAs to monitor the poultry to ensure maximum benefits for farmers and the national economy.

Boosting the poultry sector

According to the Deputy Minister, the government remains committed to reviving and expanding the country’s poultry industry. He said the initiative aims to reduce the annual importation of chicken while creating employment opportunities across the agricultural value chain.

Dumelo also announced that farmers would soon receive subsidised fertiliser, seedlings, and other farm inputs under the Feed Ghana Programme. He advised beneficiaries of the Nkoko Nketenkete initiative to take proper care of the birds to ensure the programme’s success.

Regional minister commends initiative

Francis Owusu Antwi, Bono East Regional Minister, praised the initiative and expressed optimism that farmers would use the support to help achieve the government’s vision for the poultry sector.

He noted that the programme has the potential to ease the economic burden on citizens and called on officials from the Ministry of Food and Agriculture to intensify monitoring and supervision of the birds.
