The National Investment Bank (NIB) PLC has donated GH¢1 million to support the Ghana Armed Forces’ housing redevelopment project at Burma Camp, signalling a renewed commitment to strengthening its partnership with the military.
The donation was announced during a cheque presentation ceremony attended by senior officials from both institutions.
Commitment to Long-Standing Partnership
Chief Dr Doliwura Zakaria, Managing Director of NIB PLC, described the contribution as part of the bank’s enduring relationship with the Ghana Armed Forces.
According to him, the two institutions have maintained strong ties through both “challenging and prosperous periods.”
“Your continued confidence in us, especially during the difficult restructuring years, demonstrated institutional loyalty and trust,” he said.
Announcing the seed funding, Dr Zakaria emphasised the strategic importance of the housing initiative.
“In view of the strategic importance of this initiative, and as a demonstration of our strong commitment to both the project and our valued partnership with the Ghana Armed Forces, we are pleased to announce one million cedis as seed funding,” he stated.
Bank Undergoing Structured Transformation
Dr Zakaria further disclosed that NIB is currently undergoing a structured transformation guided by its major shareholder, the Government of Ghana. As part of ongoing reforms, the bank plans to float shares to strengthen its capital base.
Additionally, the bank’s board has approved the establishment of a dedicated NIB PLC branch at Burma Camp before the end of the year. The move aims to improve access to banking services for military personnel and promote financial inclusion within the Armed Forces community.
Military Welcomes Support
On the military side, Lieutenant General William Agyapong, Chief of Defence Staff, expressed appreciation for the bank’s support and commended NIB’s recent turnaround.
He noted that accommodation remains one of the major challenges facing the Armed Forces. Following discussions with government, an agreement has been reached to deliver 10,000 housing units nationwide within the next five years.
To complement government efforts, Lt. Gen. Agyapong said the military intends to add 250 additional housing units at Burma Camp as part of the redevelopment project.
He also announced that a major launch and fundraising event for the project will take place on April 18, 2026, and called on corporate institutions to support the initiative. A formal invitation was extended to NIB PLC to participate in the event.
During the ceremony, NIB’s management presented a citation to the Chief of Defence Staff in recognition of his leadership. In return, Lt. Gen. Agyapong presented a military plaque to Dr Zakaria for his role in steering reforms at the bank.
