Football fans around the world are set for one of the biggest matches of the FIFA World Cup 2026 as Lionel Messi's Argentina take on Mohamed Salah's Egypt in a high-stakes Round of 16 encounter on Tuesday.
The winner of the blockbuster clash will advance to the quarter-finals, where either Switzerland or Colombia awaits.
Messi Chasing Another World Cup Milestone
Defending champions Argentina enter the knockout fixture after surviving a dramatic scare against tournament debutants Cape Verde in the Round of 32. The South Americans needed extra time before progressing thanks to an unfortunate own goal from Diney Borges.
Despite the exhausting 120-minute battle, Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has confirmed that 39-year-old captain Lionel Messi is fit and ready to start.
The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner is also chasing individual history, sharing seven goals with France's Kylian Mbappé and Norway's Erling Haaland in the race for the FIFA World Cup Golden Boot. Mbappé currently leads due to his superior assist tally.
Messi also remains on course to extend his record as the FIFA World Cup's all-time leading scorer, sitting one goal ahead of Mbappé.
Speaking ahead of the match, Scaloni praised Egypt and their captain.
"Egypt is a very good team with important players. Salah is a great player, and it will be a pleasure to face him. Our team knows how to play against world-class players."
Egypt Eye Historic Quarter-Final Place
Egypt have already made history by reaching the knockout rounds unbeaten and eliminating Australia in a dramatic penalty shootout.
Now, the Pharaohs are aiming to qualify for their first-ever FIFA World Cup quarter-final.
Although Mohamed Salah has scored just once in four matches, the Egyptian captain remains his country's biggest attacking threat.
Head coach Hossam Hassan believes his players are ready for the challenge.
"This is a World Cup and a great opportunity to prove ourselves. We prepare the same way regardless of who we face."
Switzerland and Colombia Also Battle for Quarter-Final Spot
Elsewhere, Switzerland meet Colombia in Vancouver in another highly anticipated Round of 16 fixture.
Colombia have emerged as one of the tournament's surprise contenders after conceding just one goal throughout the competition. Luis Díaz and James Rodríguez continue to lead an exciting Colombian attack.
Switzerland, meanwhile, are looking to reach the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since hosting the tournament in 1954 after defeating Algeria 2-0 in the previous round.
Quarter-Final Race Intensifies
Several football giants have already secured their places in the last eight, including France, Spain, England, Belgium, Morocco and Norway.
Spain ended Cristiano Ronaldo's FIFA World Cup dream with a narrow 1-0 victory over Portugal, while Belgium comfortably defeated the United States 4-1.
With Canada, Mexico and the USA all eliminated, none of the tournament's host nations remain in the competition.
